The Conservation System Alliance presented its third annual leadership award to LouAnn Jacobson at a ceremony at Crow Canyon Archeological Center near Cortez.
The event was a celebration of the 25th anniversary of Crow Canyon, a member of the Conservation Alliance.
Lou Ann, as manager of Canyons of the Ancients National Monument, is responsible for the richest collection of native american cultural sites on our public land.
Thanks to Crow Canyon Archeological Center, who nominated Lou Ann.

Lame Duck Opportunity in the US Senate!

We are on the eve of potentially great news for wild land conservation in our nation. But it won’t happen if we don’t take one simple step to push it forward.

The Senate has before it one last chance to pass a sweeping, long-awaited package of bills that would conserve hundreds of thousands of acres of new Wilderness and other special public lands and formally recognize America’s newest conservation system.

The bi-partisan package, known as the Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2008, has a good chance of passing, save for one small problem. Time.

House Votes for Permanent Protection

On April 9th, the National Landscape Conservation Act was approved by the House of Representatives. The legislation will provide permanent protection for the National Landscape Conservation's collection of wilderness areas, wild and scenic rivers, and archaeological treasure troves.

Next step? The Senate needs to vote on their version of the bill and then the House and Senate versions need to be agreed upon before going to the President for his signature. A few more steps to take, but we are getting closer. Please stay tuned.

Saturday July 19 saw Kevin Mack of The Wilderness Society and Denise Ryan of National Wildlife Federation on the foggy coast of central California for the dedication of the newest addition to the National Landscape Conservation System, Piedras Blancas.

Piedras Blancas Historic Light Station Outstanding Natural Area sits on a point where grey whales pass and thousands and sea birds, elephant seals and other marine mammals congregate.

Permanence Bill Goes to Floor Wednesday

Permanence bill, H.R. 2016, has passed committee, and is scheduled to move to the floor on Wednesday, April 9th. The National Landscape Conservation System Act, H.R. 2016, would provide much-needed recognition for the Conservation System, and ensure that it won't be administratively unraveled.

Please thank your representatives for their support passing the bill in the House Natural Resources Committee, or contact them to support passage on the House floor.

The National Landscape Conservation System contains wild and scenic rivers, national monuments, wilderness study areas and national historic trails.
